Wild type endlers - in short

Endler history

Cumana location

1937 - "The species was first collected from Laguna de Patos in Venezuela by Franklyn F. Bond"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Poecilia_wingei

1975 - Re-discovered by Dr.John Endler in the Cumana region of Venezuela.

None of the fish he brought back are thought to exist in the hobby today.

1997-1998-2004-2006 - Armando Pau collected fish  from Laguna de los Patos North Lake and Laguna de los Patos South lake, Black Bar Endler’s were collected, this was the type of Ender that was collected by John Endler in 1975.

The fish we have in the hobby today from this location come to us from fish that Armando Pau collected for Adrian Hernandez.

Adrian Hernandez line breed several strains that are popular today: Lime greens, white peacock, black bar to name a few.

Shimpei Taniguchi line breed fish from the same stock that Adrian breed his lime greens from, and Shimpeys are called emerald green/neon blue.

Campoma location

2005 - Fred Poeser and Michael Kempkes discovered endler like fish in the Campoma area of Venezuela and theese were the first to be called Poecilia wingei.
Later the fish from Cumana were included with the fish from Campoma under the scientific name Poecilia wingei.
The status of theese fish as a separate species (from Poecilia reticulata) is unresolved in the larger scientific community.

2008-2012 - Philippe Voisin & co collected fish from Campoma (and Cumana)

The fish we have in the hobby today from Philippes efforts include Campoma nr 28 "red" Campoma nr47 "blue star", El Tigre and El Silverado.

In short we can say that the endlers we see in todays hobby come from two primary sources:

1. The fish collected by Armando Pou that were line breed by Adrian Hernandez in Florida for the aquarium trade.

2. The Campoma nr 1-70 collected by Philippe Voisin & co

But..there are other sources, I allready mentioned the Neon blue/emerald green endler that was line breed by Shimpei Taniguchi from the same stock that Adrian produced his lime greens.

2004: Dr Wolfgang Staeck collected fish in Cumana - the Staeck endler.

2013: Norbert Svardal & Gerhard Bozek collected many fish from Campoma and some are still around in collections in Europe.

Hybrids: There are also lot's of known hybrids -ex. the tiger endlers and the chilli endlers.

So what is a wild type endler ?

I believe that a wild type endler is any endler phenotype from Campoma or Cumana regardless if you keep the phenotypes separate or indeed keep them separated by location.

If science tells us that fish from Campoma and fish from Cumana are both Poecilia wingei= endlers livebearers then crossing fish from the locations will still give you wild type endler.

That being said I don't create hybrids and I keep the strains separate because I think it's important to preserve the phenotypes we have in the hobby today.

The worst thing I see is people saying they create hybrids for fun and by hybrids I mean crossing a P.wingei with another species like P.reticulata or M.picta
